I must say there are some amazing options for cadets of all interests. Kudos to the NHQ CP team and everyone else who helped.

I feel the need to say that everyone who qualifies for IACE should apply!

From the NHQ CP team.

The list of the 2010 National Cadet Special Activities are up on the new website, ncsas.com! NCSAS provide several unique events every year in leadership and officer development, career orientation and technology.

You can now view each event description by clicking on the activity name; additional information (including activity costs) will be added as we get closer to the Registration, Approval, Slotting, and Payment portions of the process. Check out the Important Dates link to see the timeline for NCSAS. Instructions for how to apply (cadets and senior members) are under the Instructions tab.

Little edit for APJOC, national has it listed as running from June 16th-June26th. Oh boy I am excited for this course. If everything works out I will graduate and roll into the USAFA only a few days later. I'll enter the Academy in an amazing mental and physical state and be more than ready for anything the cadre have in store for me. After being and Military Science III cadet for a year and going through 3 weeks of Swamp Fox Cycle this course is going to be an absolute blast. I can't wait!

Hey, I was reading the ncsa you guys put up. I have been a cadet for 6 years and I loved it. This past year I was gone for my military training with the Army National Guard at Ft. Benning GA and Ft. Sam Houston TX for my combat medic training. I'm still a cadet and I still want to go to pjoc, it looks awesome. I think it would be a great way improving my combat medic skills with actual Air Force PJ's. Do you know who I can get a hold of for APJOC? Do you think they will let me skip PJOC and go to APJOC? summer 2010 will be my last summer and 2011 I will be deployed. Please reply soon, Thanks

While this is my second summer that I would be going to NCSA's, you have the same idea I have. The only thing different for me is that I would be applying for Falcon Flight at COS since I went this last summer.

If I had to recommend just one NCSA for anyone to go to, it would be COS. You learn alot and it is a blast.

Thanks.

First – thanks to NHQ for putting together another round of NCSAs.

OK – am I the only one that doesn’t like the new website layout? Having to click on everything to get any information and even then the descriptions aren’t very good. Also, I think that they should include (on the main page) those programs that aren’t CAP run, but that CAP has an affiliation to (like EAA Air Academy).

Also, why does everything have age 15 as the minimum age? I understand there are some activities that it is really a good idea to exclude the younger cadets (ex. PJOC), but everything? That leaves out at least 3 years of NCSAs for cadets – If a cadet joins at age 12 (and say they turn 12 in August), that means they are cadets for 4 years before they can go to a NCSA, and could mean they only have three summers to participate (if they have summer plans like academes after senior graduation). A cadet could go almost to C/Col without ever being ABLE to go to a NCSA. I know that some will say “Any younger and you get into a maturity issue” but that sounds like a cop-out to me. Is that not part of our dedication to cadet programs? I know that I have several cadets that are extremely upset that they won’t be able to participate in a NCSA and are thinking of leaving because of it – they won’t be able to do what they thought they might.

Or are there NCSAs that don’t require you to be 15 and I just missed them?

Not all NCSAs have a min. age of 15:

JROTC Aerospace/Technology Honors Camp. Must be min. of soph. in HS.
Glider Flight Acad. Min. 14 y/o
Hawk Mtn. Min. 13 y/o
Advanced Technologies Acad. 14 y/o.
NESA Basic GSAR. 13 y/o

Many of the NCSAs contain material that would be difficult for cadets <15 to grasp. Some activities have higher min. ages due to state laws, i.e. Blue Beret and the academics at courses like COS, CLA and others would be over the head of the typical 13-14 y/o. Also, don't forget they can staff encampments or attend a region CLS prior to age 15.

The first yr. a cadet in the program should be spent gaining some experience and attending an encampment. I'm a strong believer in requiring a basic encampment before attending any NCSA. Attending a NCSA should be considered the icing on the cake not the reason for joining.

Thanks Jenkins54.

I have several cadets that are turning 13 over then next couple of months that completed the basic encampment already and they were looking forward to some of the NCSAs. I will point some of these out to them and see if they want to go.

Just a word of caution. Make sure they read all the material about the NCSA and understand what the activity is about, particularly the costs involved. They should also be very familiar with how the slotting process works. Some cadets think that all you have to do is apply and you are in. And while some NCSAs are easier to get in than others they are all competitive. Also, be sure they meet all of the prereqs. of the course. For instance if it says applicants must have a GES or working knowledge of Windows operating systems make sure they have it. There is little or no time to take care of those types of things once they are at the activity. Too many sqdn CCs fail to make sure a cadet is qualified for a specific activity, for example, approving a butterball PT challenged cadet for PJOC. Good luck.

Space Camp and Aviation Challenge both count as NCSAs (they did a few years ago, anyway) and offer programs for the 8-18 age group. They are not governed by the CAP slotting process and are basically "pay-to-play" activities. They tend to be more expensive that NCSAs, but they are way cool and any cadet interested in an aviation/space career would benefit from attendance. They offer scholarships.

What's their hangup? You can always apply and not go if they decide you can't too...

It's a combination of cash and overprotective-parent syndrome.

Congrats on getting IACE! Might wave at that tiny dot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean 35,000 feet below ya... that's Kwajalein! :D

I'll be applying for IACE escort duty next year.
